Change of Admin & Awards Ceremony

At the end of every year, organizations, groups and individuals go through the process of looking back. The club had its Change of Administration Ceremony on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Alexander Hotel.

The moment was seized to thank the key individuals who supported us during the past year and through whose selfless acts of service we were able to meet so many of our targets.

Lion President Yvette gave her closing remarks. This was accomplished with the help of Lion Kevin as the audience watched a movie of the year’s activities. While one is working, sometimes you get so involved that you lose track of time and truthfully, you do not recognize the extent to which you go. We felt that way as we watched. To God be the glory- great things He has done.

The ceremony was ably led by Rev. Mary Graham and the new officers were taken through their vows by Lion Alfonso Wright, MJF, and PP of Grand Cayman. The evening was an enjoyable one and well attended.

Lions Planning Retreat for the Lionistic Year 2011-2012

“To fail to plan is to plan to fail”. Lion President Faz led the club in what can only be described as productive, fun-filled, intriguing and a well organized planning retreat. The date set was June 13, 2011.

Officers and members met at Brac Reef Beach Resort at 1pm and were successful in setting the calendar for the next Lionistic year; establishing the budget and committing themselves to various committees.

Although we were dealing with very serious matters; we stopped periodically for some team work fun activities, trivia and snacks. Later we regrouped for a good wholesome poolside barbecue with our family and friends at Carib Sands. The day itself was one well-spent and we are looking forward to another successful Lionistic year.

WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD - LEOS READ TO TODDLERS

Week of the Young Child is an international celebration which focuses on children age 0 – 8 years old. The Cayman Islands Ministry of Education takes a lead role in ensuring that the week is also celebrated in the Cayman Islands. Many activities were organized on Cayman Brac during the week for children in this age group, including attendees at the Cayman Brac Day Care Center.

Members of the Leos club were eager to visit the Cayman Brac Day Care center and read to the attendees. Having done this earlier in the year, the Leos once again did an excellent job in helping to stimulate the young minds and brought smiles to the faces of the children. It was an evening well spent and the Leos are already planning to visit again before the end of the Leo Year.

STORY HOUR AT THE LIBRARY - FINALE

On April 09, we had our final session of Story Hour at the Cayman Brac Public Library. Ten children came out to participate in the final reading session for this year as well as have fun in the celebrations. They were treated in the end with pizza and other snacks.

We were honoured to have Mrs. Mexi-Ann Grant, former Learning Community Leader joining with us to read to the children. They enjoyed the session and were eager to borrow books at the end of the session to take home and read. The program is aimed at developing a love for literacy and has over the years, served its purpose. We all enjoyed the sessions and are looking forward to next year’s project.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION - WATER BOTTLES

The Lions Club of Cayman Brac has always emphasized the importance of protecting the environment, undertaking projects geared at educating the community about environmental hazards and encouraging environmentally friendly habits. This year, the club decided to deviate from the usual beach clean-up and instead, made environmental awareness presentations at all of the schools on the island. At the infants and primary level the students were shown videos and a PowerPoint presentation which encouraged them to ‘Reduce, Reuse & Recycle’. The presentation and discussions which followed also emphasized the importance of everyone playing a part in protecting the environment.

The presentation at the Layman E. Scott Senior High school (formerly Cayman Brac High), also emphasized the importance of everyone taking steps to reduce the negative impact of pollution on the environment. However, at the High school level, there was a focus on the negative impact of single use water bottles on the environment.

Through the presentations made by the Lions, students and teachers were informed of the following facts:

1) Water bottles create a lot of trash. According to a small scale research undertaken by the Club, approximately 20,000 eight ounce bottles are bought every week on Cayman Brac. “There are no provisions for recycling these bottles so they just pile up at the dump”, stated environmental chair, Lion Fazileta Yusuf.

2) The plastic from the bottles do not biodegrade but photo degrade into tiny particles that stays in the environment for thousands of years, seeping into the soil, ponds and the ocean and may be ingested by marine life.

3) Bottled water is no safer than tap water in most countries.

4) Plastic bottles pose a health risk. The chemicals from the plastic seep into the water over a period of time and heat speeds up the rate at which these chemicals seep into the water.

According to club sources, “the students and staff at the high school were encouraged to reduce or refuse the use of these water bottles and carry reusable water bottles instead”.

The presentation was followed up less than a week later with a challenge to the high school population; they were challenged to boycott bottled water for one day, April 19^th. On that day the students and staff were asked to bring their reusable water bottles to school and were provided with chilled filtered water. Approximately 50 reusable water bottles were also distributed. Lion Fazileta Yusuf, environmental chair, stated that, “the challenge was well received and a large percentage of the students and almost all of the staff refrained from buying bottled water during the day and used the water provided. This also sparked an interest in many individuals thinking of reducing the use of the single water bottles as a life-style change”.

“The aim of the project was to send the message that we all need to recognize the profound impact that our activities have on the environment”, said Lion Fazileta. She further reiterated that, “as citizens of the world, it is our responsibility to protect the environment that we live in and that each of us no matter how small we may think it is, could play an important role in this protection”. 7 NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED

On April 09, we celebrated the induction of seven new Lions into our club. This in keeping with Lions International World Induction Day. Our new Lions are: Lenise Bess, Josselyn Paz-Bennett, Laurel McLaughlin, Althea Burnett, Devon Bowen, Elton Michaels and Edward Jarrett.

Our evening was enriched through the graceful manner in which Lion Elva, District Officer of 60B for Health and Wellness, conducted the induction and the inspiring challenge of Paster Eric D. Clarke, President of the Seventh Day Adventist Conference for the Cayman Islands. Our new members have already been very active in serving the community and helping to make a difference in the community of Cayman Brac.

Road Safety Signs - A Signature Project by the Lions and Leos

The occurrence of road traffic accidents in the Cayman Islands is high and in recent times has become quite frequent on Cayman Brac. In the past we have had fatalities ranging from the young to the old. We can all perhaps recall the very sad moments within the past 8 years where young members of the Brac community lost their lives in road accidents and those whose lives have been significantly hampered and perhaps forever. Accidents happen for varied reasons, but it appears that speeding and drunk driving have topped the list as main causes; ones we can prevent.

It is with this in mind that the Lions Club of Cayman Brac decided to focus on road safety as a signature project for the year 2010-2011. The young men and women of the Leos Club of Cayman Brac saw the importance of such a project and also decided to join their mother-club in supporting the project. They did their own fundraising and were able to financially support the project.

The club did much groundwork to mobilize the project. This included collaboration with the RCIP Cayman Brac in identifying the most urgent areas to be targeted. Through such collaborative efforts, the club decided to focus on three themes: Seatbelt, Speeding, and Drunk Driving.

In an attempt to increase awareness and engage the youth in the project, the club launched a competition among the Cayman Brac High School students for creating the slogans for the signs. An assembly was conducted at the school where students were encouraged to think about the three themes. Video clippings were shown emphasizing of the importance of road safety under the same three themes and students invited to enter the contest. Joel Gayle emerged the winner of the competition. The slogans he came up with were;

“Buckle Up or be Buckled Under”

“You think you have skills… Speed kills”,

“Don’t drink and drive… Stay alive”

These slogans will forever be etched in the minds of all passers-by.

On Sunday morning of March 20^th, we officially mounted the first sign, focusing on the use of seat belts, south of the Cayman Brac High school. In attendance were Sister Islands MLA Mr. Moses Kirkconnel, District Commissioner Mr. Ernie Scott, Lions Club District 60B Governor Lion June McCatty MJF, District 60B Region 4 Chairman Lion Catherine Peart MJF, Representative from the RCIP Cayman Brac, Principal of the Cayman Brac High School Mr. Adrian Jones, Supervisor of the Cayman Brac Day Care Center Mrs. Neila Jones, Lion Stanley Scott of Grand Cayman Lions Club, Cayman Brac Lions Club President Yvette Gayle, Cayman Brac Leo President Katherine Lazzari and other members of the Lions and Leo club of Cayman Brac. The club is very thankful to Scotts Industries and Mr. Moses Kirkconnell for also partnering with us. Their generous contribution to the project is greatly appreciated. Funds for the project were raised mainly through Movie Nights held by the Lions and Leos. In addition, the Leos sold Roses, Carnations and Chocolates on Valentine’s Day and used funds from the sale to support the project.

D-Signs Ltd in Grand Cayman was responsible for the production of the signs while the Public Works Department on Cayman Brac through Mr. Ernie Scott provided some labour in securing the posts in the ground.

The project is a community effort and the Lions and Leo club are all about serving the community. The clubs consider this a very important project and see this as phase 1 of many more phases. In this phase we will complete the mounting of 4 signs. We want to produce and mount another 4 making it a total of 8, as well as find other strategies to continue educating the public about the importance of safety on the roads. Leos Spread Love on Valentine's Day

The Leo club of Cayman Brac sold roses and chocolate on Monday February 14^th, 2011, Valentine’s Day. The event served as both a project and a fundraiser. They made over CI$200 which will be used to support the Joint Road Safety Signs project with the Lions. Members sold 60 roses, 15 carnations and over 100 chocolate bars. The Leos saw the event as opportunity to serve the youth by providing them with tokens to express love on Valentine’s Day. Many bought tokens for their parents as well as friends. It was a huge success.

Lions Movie Night – Road Safety Fundraiser

Lions Club is a non-profit organization. This means we have no revenue except what we raise from the community to be reinvested into the community.

Lions came out in their numbers to put on two movies. The proceeds will go directly towards the purchasing of the metal posts that will mount the road signs. We made approximately four hundred dollars.

Road Safety Signs - A Signature Project

Lionism is synonymous with the promotion of health and community development. In keeping with our pledge to respond to the varied needs of our community, our signature project this year emphasizes the need for making our roads safe for drivers, passengers as well as pedestrians.

On Monday, February 21, we launched a competition at the Cayman Brac High School, inviting participation from the youths to write the slogans that would be placed on the Road Signs.

The three areas for special emphasis are: Speeding, Seatbelts and the avoidance of the use of alcohol when driving.

The winner of the categories was Joel Gayle, a year 9 student. To the right are the catch phrases he came up with: ‘Buckle Up! Or Be Buckled Under; Don’t Drink and Drive! Stay Alive. His other idea ‘Don’t get the Chills! Speed Kills! was modified to ‘You think You Have Skills? Speed Kills!

We are particularly thrilled that the project is being done jointly with our Leos. The foundation is laid, the future is better because our youths are involved every step of the way!

New LEO Inducted

At the January 11^th club meeting, the Leos inducted another new member to help them serve the Cayman Brac community. Leo Felano Francis, took his oath and received his pin, symbolizing his membership in the Cayman Brac’s Leo Club. He was charged to promote a positive image among his peers, support the club in all of its activities and attend regular meetings in order to contribute his ideas to the club. The ceremony was conducted by PP and current Leo Advisor Lion Kevin. He joins the other 21 members of the club.

Brac’s Biggest Loser 2011 Launched

On January 24th, we launched our annual Biggest Loser Competition. The club schedules an exercise programme that aims at assisting those who are desirous of losing weight to do so. We also give tips on nutrition, check the registered participants body weight and mass, and work with them at finding a suitable weight loss goal.

This year we have eleven persons signed on and it was quite pleasing that majority were men. Attractive incentives will be given to the persons who lose the most percentage weight.

We echo the wise words of Jim Rohn: "Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live."

Annual Corporate Cup Relays 2011

The morning of January 24th dawned with one hundred and twelve eager participants in the Lions Club annual Corporate Cup Road Relays. Through the help of our major sponsor, Cayman National Bank’s generous gift of one thousand dollars, each participant received a complimentary a TShirt; the first place winners of each event received a cup and the second and third place winners received medals.

The day was an exciting one for all. We were able to promote Lionism and our core values of health and fitness. It was a pleasure seeing the huge turnout of the community-churches, schools, police, hospital, the very young and the not so young anymore. The All Nations Apostolic Church once again secured the envied Corporate Cup.

The club participated in the Remembrance Day Service by laying a wreath to honour the veterans of World Wars 1 & 2 as well as the sea men. The Cayman Islands history records the invaluable contribution of those men who sacrificed their lives for the present day freedom enjoyed and those men whose early days of toil laid the building block of the economy.

DIABETES AWARENESS IN LITTLE CAYMAN AND CAYMAN BRAC

During the month of November, worldwide, special focus is put on Diabetes awareness. This year, the club decided to revisit Little Cayman to conduct Diabetes Screening. On Saturday, November 13, 2010, ten Lions boarded the small plane to carry out BMI Screening and Blood Sugar Testing.

We screened 34 individuals or 25% of the very small population. Special commendation must be given to Nurse Mary, resident nurse on that small island, for her indispensable support. We brought with us pamphlets, goody bags, healthy snacks and educational materials to share with the residents.

The next day, we joined the Diabetic Support group on their World Diabetes Day Stride and lighting of the museum blue.

LIONS CELEBRATE CULTURE THROUGH FLOAT PARADE

Saturday, November 27, 2010 culminated the celebration of Pirates Week. The organizers included the return of a family, fun, cultural event- the Pirates’ Week Float Parade. Lions showcased our young beauties-Ms. Teen Cayman Brac (Monique Connolly), Junior Miss Cayman Brac (Kassandra McDowell) and Little Ms. Cayman Brac (Lucy Parchman). The community came out in their numbers. There were at least three hundred spectators and participants. Everyone had good, wholesome enjoyment as they listened to music, frolicked on the streets and ate food reflecting the Cayman’s culture.

LIONS BEG DONATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS PROJECT

Christmas is the time for giving. Traditionally, each year, Lions hit the streets with tins and Christmas gear to solicit funds to purchase gifts for all the children and goody baskets for all the elderly on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

LEOS READ AT THE DAY CARE

In November, the Day Care Center on Cayman Brac observed a week of Literacy. The LEOS accepted an invitation to read to the children as part of the Literacy week activities. Twelve LEOS journeyed to the Day Care Center and spent an hour reading various age appropriate stories to the children, who enjoyed the session.

The LEOS are always fond of interacting with the young children and have undertaken other projects at the Day Care in the past. They are also planning on conducting another reading session in the next LEOS half year.

PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

In collaboration with Cayman First Insurance Company Ltd. and Brac Insurance Associates Ltd., the Claudette Upton Keeley’s Public Speaking Contest was held on Monday, November 22nd , 2010 and Wednesday, November 24th , 2010. The aim of this contest is to develop the art of speaking and writing amongst our youths.

The contest was well supported by parents, friends and school leaders. The young orators delivered speeches of the highest quality and answered the questions posed in a professional and thorough manner. We were all impressed. The judges had the difficult task of determining the winners of the very attractive, up-to-date technological prizes.

However, first place winners, Joel Gayle (High School Division) and Abijith Anu (Primary School) won the coveted IPAD with 16Gb of memory. Second and third place in the primary school division went to Cassidy Connor and Kassandra McDowell respectively while second and third place in the High school division went to Logan Keyser and Venkata Bata respectively.

Back to School Pajama Reading Party

Literacy is the foundation block for learning. As summer came to an end and thoughts refocused on Back to School, once again the Club invited the children to our annual ‘Back to School Pajama Reading Party’. The attendance was phenomenal. There were over 90 kids.

The library was packed as they all came bubbly and energetic dressed in their pajamas and carrying flashlights, dolls etc. We read to them and sent them on a ‘Scavenger Hunt’ to find back to school supplies. They were treated afterwards to milk and cookies. It was fun.

25 Years of Sterling Service to Cayman Brac

The Cayman Brac Lions Club was chartered on September 10, 1985 by the then District Governor, Emanuel Lake. It started with 33 members. In recognition of this significant milestone, we planned a weekend long celebration.

On Friday, September 10, we distributed plants to all four schools on the island. This is in keeping with our firm belief that sustainable development begins with taking an active interest in preserving our environment. It was very fitting, we thought, to begin this idea with the youth.

Saturday, September 11 was a busy day. We joined the Creek Seventh Day Adventist Church in worship. The service was packed. The programme included our District Governor for District 60B, Lion June McCatty bringing greetings and Lion President Yvette giving an overview of the club. Pastor Eric Clarke, President of the Cayman Islands Seventh Day Adventist Conference, delivered an inspirational and challenging message, ‘Don’t Box in God’. We came away spiritually re-energized.

The crowning moment for the day was our 25th Anniversary Charter Dinner. The function was held at the Brac Reef Beach Resort. Our keynote speaker, Lion June McCatty encouraged us to continue our sterling work. Her stirring thought underpinned our theme for the year-Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. Other specially invited guests include: Lion Nellie Walker, Zone Chair for District 60B, Zone 4b; government officials, charter members, Lions from the Lions Club of Grand Cayman and Tropical Gardens. The evening was relaxing, fun-filled and special. We were graced with live music provided by the ‘Jammers’ and the angelic voice of Mrs. Georgia Isaacs. Presentations were made to Lions who have given distinguished service to the club as well as the community.

We reminisced through the video presentation, ‘Through the Years’ and came away with renewed energy to “SERVE”.

Leos and some Lions were caught chatting on their Black-Berry phones during the Annual Christmas party. Even the youngest participant, 14 month old, Kai Roberts was engaged in the digital form of communication. Seems as if the future of Lions meetings is about to change.

The club held its annual Family Christmas party along with members of the Leos Club. The event was held at Buckey’s Restaurant, West End, Cayman Brac. It was a wonderful evening of fellowship with the young Leos. Lion President Ventisha also pinned Lion Membership chair, Elaine Dixon, with her membership key pin which was received from Lions International.

Gift Distribution for the Elderly

Every year, the Lions Club joins forces with the Leos Club of Cayman Brac and distributes gift packages of food and clothing items to the elderly on the island. Members visit homes from the East to the West on the island, chat with the elderly and hand them packages. The club is of the belief that at such a special time of year, the elderly must be remembered and efforts made to cheer them up. Many members who participate, find this activity joyful as they hear stories from the elderly. It is a wonderful opportunity for the Lions and Leos to jointly serve the community. In addition to stopping at individual homes, gift baskets were also delivered to the Rest Homes and Hospital on the island.

Christmas Day and Lions Club of Cayman Brac have been closely linked for decades. It is traditional, that Lions parade through the island and deliver gifts to all children on this very special day. Many parents grew up with this activity and look forward to it with their children every year. Santa and Mrs. Claus rode from Carib Sands apartment in the South Western end of the island all the way to Spot Bay in the Eastern tip of the Island. Horns were honked to sound the passing of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Many would join the parade of vehicles just to get involved in the cheer that the activity brings.

Although the giving of gifts has somewhat satiated the children on the Island, it has become a symbol of hope, joy and cheer. It further symbolizes the spirit of togetherness that the season brings. There are still many children who had no gifts for Christmas, for many and varied reasons. The club was able to fill that gap for many families and put a smile on those children faces. At Christmas time and all year round, we serve!

SMALL IN SIZE BUT LARGE IN DEEDS

The Cayman Brac club has been receiving International Coverage of many of its activities in recent times. In addition to this BLOG being featured on the Lions International's website for the month of November, we have also been in the LIONS magazine recently. Our variety show last year was featured in a Christmas section entitled Christmas in Cayman. They highlighted our efforts to raise funds to assist with purchasing gifts for the children and the elderly in the community. We have also been featured on several films from LCIF. Cayman Brac - At a Zone Meeting Once More

It was probably the largest Cayman Brac contingent ever at a Zone meeting. Are you wondering why? Well, the meeting was held in Grand Cayman, just a CI$120 away from Cayman Brac. Now compare that to an additional CI$250 or CI$300 in air fare alone to Jamaica. At a very critical time when funds are at an all-time low, it was our best opportunity to physically mix with our fellow clubs in Zone 4B. Cayman Brac has always been serving its community well, even though it was always financially difficult to travel to the various zone, region and District meetings. We were happy for the opportunity and hope that there will be many more.

The Lions Variety Show - A Big Hit

Dance, drama, music, comedy and fashion; a fantastic evening at the Aston Rutty Centre on November 14th, 2009. The Club hosted its second annual Variety Show to raise funds for its Christmas Gift Distribution programme for the children and the elderly. It was an evening of excellence as the crowd which being relatively large in size, was entertained by Lions and Friends. Many patrons commented that it was very well organized and has been the best show they have been to in years.

The show served TWO real functions in the community; the first is to raise the needed funds for our Christmas programme, but it also provided an opportunity for the young and old to entertain and be entertained. This show is also one avenue in which we promote talent and cultural awarness on the small, but diverse island of Cayman Brac. Lions International is keen on projects and activities which build talent and cultural awarenesss. We on Cayman Brac understand the need to provide that service as opportunities in that area are limited.

The show was ably led by our own President, Lion Ventisha Conolly, who did a fantastic job in running the show smoothly. A wide array of local talents were displayed and the dance and fashion show were top-of-the-line. SIMPLY PUT, IT WAS A GREAT EVENING.

Diabetes Education and Support

The club joined with the Cayman Brac Diabetic Support group in hosting a Diabetes Awareness Walk and Symposium at the Aston Rutty Center. The club sponsored shirts for the event and made a video presentation on Lions efforts in the field of diabetes education and support. A special presentation was also made on Diabetic Retinopathy. It was a successful evening and there were a large number of participants.

The club will continue to support diabetes education and plans to emphasize healthy lifestyles among the youths as a preventative measure against diabetes.

International Peace Poster Contest

After almost 2 months of hard work, the peace poster contest winner for 2009-2010 was selected. Last year’s winner (2008-2009) was also selected as the judging was postponed due to Hurricane Paloma. Students were able to illustrate their understanding of peace through their artistic abilities.

The club sponsors the contest each year with the aim of promoting peace among the youth. We believe that it is important that young people understand what peace is and develop habits which will help them to live peacefully with each other.

We are very grateful to LIME Cayman Brac for their continued support of this contest. This year, they have donated a mini laptop and 2 ONE year free ADSL internet service as prizes for the contest.

We are also thankful to Cayman Brac High school ART teacher, Ms Alison McLeod for her continued work with the contest. Congratulations to the winners, Tafari Young (2009-2010) and Edmundlee Keatin (2008-2009) featured in photo below. The Claudette Upton-Keeley Public Speaking Contest

On November 18th and 19th we launched the first ever Claudette Upton-Keeley Public Speaking contest. We are truly appreciative of Sagicor Life and Sagicor General Insurance for their sponsorship of the contest. It was a very exciting and successful one. There were 7 contestants in the primary school division and 8 in the high school division.

The contest is aimed at developing research, writing and speaking skills and provides the opportunity for young students to build their self confidence. We felt that there were not many opportunities for senior students in the primary schools and junior students in the High school to develop their public speaking skills. As a result, the idea of this contest was born. The club believes that Public speaking is important and is a skill that almost all professions will require.

Participants ably presented their arguments to a panel of judges who in the end, questioned their knowledge and insight into the arguments they presented. It was a difficult task for the judges to decide on the winners, but in the end they identified THREE from each division.

It was a great evening. The students all vied for prizes of laptops, iPods, Digital Cameras and trophies. We look forward to next year’s contest as we continue with the development of literacy among our youth. In the primary division, the places were as follows:

First: Katherine Tatum, Second: Logan Keyser, Third: Dimitri Christian.

Other participants at the primary division were: Alex Flores, Mikayla Mitchell, Amanda Frederick, Elton Martin.

In the High school division places were as follows:

First: Anitha Velusamy, Second: Nayo Swan, Third: Leshontae Missick.

Other participants in the High school division were: Anthony Rivers, Jacob Scott, Venkatta Batta, Joel Gayle and Luciano Lazzari.

Pink Day: Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

Members and friends of the Lions Club of Cayman Brac participated in Pink Day on Friday October 9th, 2009. Pink bracelets were sold to students of the Cayman Brac High school and they were allowed to wear them for the day. Other members of the community wore something pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness. A number of Lions were seen wearing pink. Proceeds from the bracelet sales will go towards teh club's ongoing health related projects which includes cancer awareness.

Begging for Sight Preservation

On Saturday October 3rd, Lions took the streets to beg monetary donations to support sight related projects. Over the years, the club has been assisting needy members of the community with eye-testing and the purchase of glasses.

Just recently, the club assisted 3 members of the community with testing and acquisition of glasses. We are happy to report that we received approximately CI$1200 in donations on Saturday October 3rd. We express our gratitude to all those who gave, regardless of the quantity. You have contributed to another worthy cause.

We know that times are hard, but imagine that is is even more difficult for those who have been in need of our help. If you can still give, do not hesitate to do so. It is not what we have that matters, but it is what we do with what we have to help others. Thank you for helping us to serve!

Breast Cancer Awareness on the Brac with LCTG

On Saturday September 19th, 2009, the club hosted a Breast Cancer Walk/Run and Awareness meeting on Cayman Brac jointly with the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens. Registration for the walk/run started at 5:30am while the event kicked off at 6am. The aim of both events was to increase awareness of Breast Cancer on the Brac as well as to help raise funds to support the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens’on-going projects in the area of Breast Cancer support and awareness.

The awareness meeting was held at 7:30pm at the Cayman Brac High School. Dr. Velusamy of the Faith hospital and Dr. Reid of the Brac Clinic made presentations on various aspects of Breast Cancer. Members of the audience were also given the opportunity to ask questions related to Breast Cancer. It was a very informative session. Mammogram vouchers were also given away.

Public Library Pajama Party

On Friday September 4th, 2009, the club hosted a pajama party at the public library from 5pm until 7pm. The initiative was a part of the club’s ongoing efforts to promote literacy among the youth. The party was very well attended and enjoyed by the children. It was opened to children of all ages at the primary school as well as the high school.

The Cayman Brac public library was also presented with gifts of new books on CDs as well as regular books for addition to the Library’s collection. This is the second time that the club has donated books on CDs to the library. The club will continue to promote literacy through continued donations to the library as well as additional pajama parties alongside the annual “story-hour” project usually held in May/June.

LIBRARY READING PROGRAM BEGINS

The annual story-time sessions at the Public Library started on May 2nd, 2009 and will run until June 13th 2009. The participants are so far very excited about reading and has been showing much interest. One of the missions of the program is to develop a love for reading and books and encourage children to borrow books for reading at home. The aim is to promote literacy from an early age.

BRAC LIONS HELP FIRE VICTIMS

The Lions Club of Cayman Brac donated essential home supplies to the families who suffered losses from the fire on Cayman Brac back in March this year. The club purchased a range of items including pots, plates, cutlery, pillows, blankets, laundry baskets, sheet sets, baby diapers, wipes and clothes iron.

Two families were affected. They both received donations from the club. The club was happy that they could have assisted and encourages others to give what they can to assist the families. They have lost everything and it will take time and money for them to replace all they have lost. The club reminds the community of Albert Einstein’s famous words, “A life lived for others, is a life worthwhile”.

BRAC LIONS DONATE TO SEAMEN'S SOCIETY

On Saturday April 26th, the Cayman Brac Lions club made a donation of CI$500 to the Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Veteran and Seamen’s Society.

The club continues to play its part in helping to improve the community of Cayman Brac. Funds donated will go towards the re-building of the center after being destroyed by Hurricane Paloma last November.

The Lions club is encouraging other organizations and companies to support the Veteran and Seamen’s society by making donations to assist them in the rebuilding process.

Brac's Biggest Loser Grand Finale - Phase 1

Presentations were made to the top 3 participants in the Brac's Biggest Loser contest. Phase 1 of the program ended on April 4th 2009. Nurse Reid, wife of Dr. Reid from the Brac Clinic led an invigorating session of aerobics to start off the session.

Lion Fazileta Yusuf then welcomed all the participants and congratulated them for their hard work and determination. Dr. Reid of the Brac Clinic then addressed the participants and reitorated the fact that the decision to join the program in itself makes everyone a winner. He spoke about the importance of exercise and a healthy diet in sustaining life.

The grand finale took place at the Scott's Dock, West End Cayman Brac. Participants were enthusiastic about the program and encouraged us to continue. As a result, the program continues into phase 2 which will run from May 2nd until July 1st.

FISH YOUR STYLE 2009

It was a wonderful evening and the event was well supported by the community. Residents came out in large numbers and bought their meals from a selection of fried, steamed, roasted, cayman style and escoveiched. Side servings were festival, rice and beans, white rice, garlic bread, iced tea, lemonade and water.

Thanks to the members of the Ebenezer Baptist Church for their generous donation of CI$1200 to help us with our ongoing community service projects. We do accept donations from anyone or any group as we strive to serve our community well.
